YAS' GUIDE TO SANTORINI
Where do I begin…. After our wedding in Italy, Jason and I honeymooned in Greece for just over a week. Our goal wasn’t to see every island, but rather enjoy the culture and beauty of two while giving ourselves a chance to relax. So we started in Mykonos for a few days and then ferried to Santorini for 5 nights. The stark white structures with blue rooftops are even more gorgeous in person than the classic pictures I’m sure you’ve seen. The sunset over Oia was breathtaking, and the food is some of the best I’ve ever had. Just writing this makes me want to go back immediately!
WHERE TO STAY:
CAVOTAGOO is at the edge of the world. Newly built, this chic hotel with an infinity pool had some of the most breathtaking views in all of Santorini. While the island has so much to offer, it was hard to leave as we were spoiled with a great restaurant and in room massages.
WHAT TO DO:
Santorini wine isn’t nearly as popular as other European countries, but their indigenous varieties are nothing short of spectacular. Crisp and fresh, these vineyards are a must visit if you like wine.
SANTOS WINES - Santo Winery is a lot more touristy than the others but the views are spectacular.
Rent a VESPA or ATV to see the whole island. This is a great way to get around Santorini and take in the sights. It’s safe to drive on the road and there is plenty of parking. It is super fun to stop anywhere you want to explore.
WHERE TO EAT:
There isn’t a shortage of amazing restaurants in Santorini, and while we needed a month for the culinary tour, we managed to find some of the best in 5 days. Here are a few great spots we ate at, but don’t underestimate the $2 gyro on any main street corner.
AMMOUDI FISH TAVERN is a small restaurant on the water at the end of a long walkway leading from Oia. But don’t worry, if you’d rather take a taxi to or from the restaurant, you can do that also.
THE ATHENIAN HOUSE - We went here on our last night it was one of the best meals I’ve had anywhere in the world. That’s not an exaggeration. Please, if you go to Santorini, make a reservation, it’s well worth it and centrally located in Imerovigli.
OVAC - The dinner menu at Cavotagoo hotel was ok but their sushi while sitting by the pool was fantastic.
THE CAVE AT NIKOLAS - Located in Akrotiri on the southern beach, this little cafe is conveniently next to the Red Sand beach. It was about a 20 minute ATV ride from our hotel and well worth checking out.
Sunsets in Santorini are as dreamy as they say. It’s called magic hour for a reason. Pictures truly do not do them justice. Date night every night came with a sunset stroll or sunset view from our dinner.
Have a wonderful time, if you decide to visit!
